Supporting crowd management at mass-events through Intelligent Exit Lighting based on realtime crowd measurements.

Challenge

The goal of this project was to find a new application for the Corning® Fibrance® Light-Diffusing Fiber, by designing a new product or service that could become a start-up within their company. After a trend analysis and desk research, I've set up an individual design goal; efficiently navigate crowds on events by means of Intelligent Lighting.

My role and impact

In this individual project I followed the complete design cycle with a strong focus on the conceptualization phase. During the project I've conducted multiple types of research to indicate issues, find opportunities and evaluate ideas or concepts. I've carefully analyzed the management of safety at a big event in Delft, from the organization to the end of the festival.

Result

The result of this project is the Intelligent Lighting Design "Lantaarnpijl". It guides visitors at festivals when there is a need for guidance or stimulation to move in a certain direction; away from the danger, to the nearest exit or the one that is least busy. The directions of the arrows spread above the crowd, depend upon realtime measurements (warmth and WiFi) of how the mass behaves and where the exits are. The "Lantaarnpijl" should be spread across the festival site to reach the mass with its signs. All that visitors should do is follow the light, and then everything will be allright.

Final Bachelor Project awarded with 8.5 (out of 10).
